Calendar / Art of the People Weaving Demonstration #3
Friday July 13, 2018 at 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
In Burma, many have lost the skill of weaving. The women of the Karen Organization of San Diego in City Heights have committed themselves to preserving this important ability and aspect of their culture. Weavers Nya Paw, Ma Nyo and Nee Say have graciously agreed to demonstrate their talents throughout five sessions, held at Karen in City Heights and Mingei over the course of several months. This installment will be held at Karen’s headquarters in City Heights.
They will be creating contemporary clothing for a woman, man and child using specific cotton thread from Thailand and two traditional bamboo looms. In Karen culture, to complete a weaving project, the weaver does not only need to be skilled in the craft, but also to know the set of cultural guidelines. For example, children typically wear white and men wear red and white. Unmarried women wear a long white loose dress and married women wear a red skirt and top.
This is the fourth event from the CREATIVE CITY HEIGHTS series, a community initiative serving the City Heights neighborhood in partnership with Karen Organization of San Diego, The AjA Project, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA) and Media Arts Center San Diego.
Event is FREE.
Space is limited.
