The Convergence of Art + Architecture at Midcentury

Paul Bockhorst’s documentary film, Claremont Modern: The Convergence of Art + Architecture at Midcentury, surveys midcentury modern architecture and design in Claremont, CA, with an emphasis on the interaction between artists and architects. The documentary also examines artist Millard Sheets’ important but often-overlooked contributions to modern architecture. Following the screening, Director & Producer Paul Bockhorst will be joined by Millard Sheets’ daughter and Mingei Trustee, Carolyn Sheets Owen–Towle, to discuss the film. Additionally, Adam Arenson, a history professor and San Diego native who is interviewed in the film, will be describing his brand-new book Banking on Beauty: Millard Sheets and Midcentury Commercial Architecture in California, and will be available to sign copies.
Prior to the film, enjoy a Library Open House, from 5-6pm. Learn about the library’s collections and how the museum’s archives connect with the film. Light refreshments provided.
