Calendar / Cochineal, A Red to Dye For

A Workshop on One of the World’s Oldest and Most Desirable Dyes

Saturday November 11, 2017 at 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Meet the bug that changed the world of color, cochineal. In this all-day workshop, taught by Mingei’s Textile Collections Manager Sarah Winston, participants will explore the historical, cultural and symbolic importance of cochineal dye in Pre-Columbian and Mesoamerican cultures, and the revival of natural dyes in contemporary woven art. Attendees will learn the art of natural dyeing with cochineal, the different steps of the dyeing process and coax a wide range of hues, going from purple to pink, using our cochineal dye vat. Each student will work on a scarf using a variety of shibori techniques (stitch or clamp resist), and then dye their piece in one of the cochineal baths.
