Inspired by Kanban – Traditional Shop Signs of Japan, join Guest Artist Cecelia Linayao this May to create your own wooden Daruma! Darumas in Japan are symbols of success, determination, and overcoming adversity. The eyes of a Daruma are usually blank. After receiving one, the owner fills in one eye when setting a goal, starting a new venture, or making a wish, then paints the other when it has been fulfilled.
Guest Artist Bio:
Cecelia Linayao is an award-winning mixed media painter. She is based locally in San Diego and her art is global. Her paintings – in solo and team projects have been seen across the United States, China, Canada, Mexico and Italy.
She is a Peace Paint Ambassador with the Art Miles Mural Project. Her mural on canvas featuring the Pope and Vista Catholic School won a My Hero Award in 2015.
Her chalk pastel projects include being the 2016 Featured Artist at the famed I Madonnari Street Painting Festival in Santa Barbara, CA.
Currently she is the Artist-in-Residence at Valencia Park Elementary STEAM Magnet School in San Diego, CA.
She is especially excited to work with the Mingei International Museum’s Family Sunday. Facilitating the Daruma project (Japanese symbol of perseverance and good luck) illustrates nicely with her philosophy that art makes you think and feel.
