Calendar / Family Sunday Pop Up
Sunday February 17, 2019 at 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Join us for a Family Sunday Pop-Up, hosted by Mingei International Museum! This free program for all ages includes interactive activities throughout the library, a hands-on art project, musical performances, storytelling, prizes and much more. Each month the Museum partners with local artists and organizations throughout the San Diego region to offer a diverse range of programming tied thematically to the Museum’s permanent collection.
This month, join us in celebrating Black History Month by creating your own Gee’s Bend-inspired abstract quilt. Finding inspiration from the bold quilts created in this African American community in rural Alabama, you will experiment with colorful fabrics and embroidery thread to craft your unique creation.
Mini Mingei Storytime: Look, discuss and listen during this 30-minute interactive story time intended for art-loving children and families of all ages. Offered at 1:00pm.
At 2:30 pm, enjoy a workshop by Arts for Learning San Diego artist, Akayaa Atule, a master drummer and singer from Ghana. Play along with shakers and other instruments and join in with call and response all while learning about Ghana’s culture and traditions.
Guest Artist Bio: As San Diego’s only Afro-pop band, Akayaa & Bolga Zohdoomah write, arrange, and perform songs rooted in the traditions of Highlife and Afro-Beat, two of the most well-known styles of West African popular music. Deeply rooted in her Frafra ancestry, Akayaa was raised singing, dancing, and drumming the traditional music of this part of West Africa. Throughout her life as a professional musician, she has incorporated a wide variety of song writing, musical styles, and dancing from all over Ghana.
