Calendar / Ghanaian Kente Cloth

A Lecture by Dr. Boatema Boateng

Thursday March 3, 2016 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Presented in conjunction with Mingei’s exhibition of Kente Cloth, on view beginning in February, learn from Dr. Boatema Boateng about Ghanaian Kente Cloth, its significance and the context in which it is created. Dr. Boateng is an Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego, whose work is on the encounter between intellectual property law and complex cultural forms like Ghanaian Adinkra and Kente textiles. In her book, The Copyright Thing Doesn’t Work Here: Adinkra and Kente Cloth and Intellectual Property in Ghana, she examines ways in which these ideas converge to produce and regulate both subjects and knowledge.
