The Curious Journey of Japanese Lacquer Makers' Tools

Friday November 4, 2016 at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

This talk, presented by Dr. Kendall Brown, guest curator of LAYERS OF BRILLIANCE, explores how the process of making everyday lacquer objects, like bowls and cups, over time transforms the lacquer artisan’s tools into objects of beauty. The lecture examines the lacquer-making tradition in the rural town of Kitakata, and how the traditional approach converged with modern “craft tourism” produces—by incident and intention—objects that may strike us as a combination of modern art and folk craft.
