Calendar / Spring Art Excursion
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and Watts Towers Arts Center
Thursday May 14, 2015 at 8:00 am - 6:30 pm
Spend a day in Los Angeles with Mingei exploring international folk art and the self-taught work of Sam Rodia. We will begin our day visiting the Natural History Museum of LA’s exhibition Grandes Maestros: Great Masters of Iberoamerican Folk Art, Collection of Fomento Cultural Banamex, which celebrates folk art of artists from 22 Latin-American countries. Box lunches will be provided at the Natural History Museum café, which you are welcome to eat on benches overlooking the Exposition Park Rose Garden. Next, we will split into two groups for guided tours of Watts Towers and the Watts Towers Arts Center. The towers are 17 major sculptural structures built by Sam Rodia over a period of 34 years. They are entirely adorned with a diverse mosaic of broken glass, sea shells, pottery and tile, a rare piece of 19th-century, hand painted Canton ware and many pieces of 20th-century American ceramics.
Includes: Transportation in chartered coach; admission fees; boxed lunches; guided tours; refreshments on the bus; tax-deductible contribution to Mingei International Museum. Pickup locations: Balboa Park and Carlsbad.
