LA Excursion | Mingei International Museum

This event is now sold out. We are taking waitlist reservations only.

Welcome back to Art Excursions! Pick up where we left off from our last excursion in February 2020 and join us once again for a special day with Mingei—outside the Museum walls. Venture north to Los Angeles’ Museum Row where we will start the day touring another recently transformed space—the Academy Museum of Motion Picture—designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. The Academy Museum is the largest in the United States devoted to the arts, sciences and artists of moviemaking.

We’ll break for time and lunch on our own (The Original Farmer’s Market is a 10-15 minute walk and highly recommended!), and gather again just across the street at the newly branded Craft Contemporary (formerly the Craft and Folk Art Museum). There, we will visit two new exhibitions; Many, a group exhibition featuring twelve Los Angeles-based artists who utilize the concept of multiples in their practice to construct narrative, examine modes of production or spread knowledge; and The Sum of the Parts: Dimensions in Quilting, featuring the work of five diverse artists who push the dimensionality of quilts. From there we’ll end with Mingei Bus Happy Hour as we head back to San Diego after a creatively packed day.

Proof of vaccination will be required for all participants, and masks will be required when not eating or drinking on the bus. Pick ups in Balboa Park and Carlsbad.

Includes: Transportation in chartered coach; admission fees; guided tours; refreshments on the bus. Lunch is on one’s own.
