Mingei Member Art Excursion | Mingei International Museum

Join us for a Mingei Members' Excursion to Tijuana on Saturday, May 18 offered in collaboration with Verónica Hernández from Mexico Curated. We’ll visit Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) to see their presentation of La Frontera, the sister exhibit to the show currently on view at Mingei and have an overall tour of CECUT's history with independent curator Illya Haro. We’ll then head to lunch at Caesar's located in Downtown Tijuana, for a family style selection of gourmet appetizers and tacos that includes vegan options. Please see bottom text for full menu options.

Then we’ll walk a short distance to the studio of Tijuana-based artist Enrique Ciapara for a tour of his space with the artist and curator Illya Haro and a glass of wine. We’ll finish the day at the Mexican design concept store OBJECT to shop, view an installation that was a part of Tijuana Design Week, and a taste of artisan mezcal from Oaxaca.

Your ticket includes a chartered bus from Balboa Park (Inspiration Point) to our Tijuana destinations, entrance to CECUT, lunch, treats (water, burritos, and cold brew) for the return drive back to San Diego, as well as a tax-deductible donation to Mingei International Museum. Lunch is included with registration fee but any alcoholic drinks will need to be purchased separately by the traveler. Once you have registered, you will receive additional travel information and the tax-deductible details via email from the Mingei membership team.

  • You will need a valid passport to travel across the border. Please check your passport expiration date before purchasing a ticket. There will be no refunds after May 1, 2024.

  • Please note, there will be stairs you will need to take to access Enrique Ciapara’s studio. You will also need to get off the bus at both borders, cross on foot, and then return to the bus after entering Mexico and the U.S.
