Founded in 1978, Mingei International Museum collects, preserves and exhibits “art of the world, art of the people,” including folk art, craft, and design from all eras and cultures. Located in San Diego’s iconic Balboa Park, our highly respected Museum offers stunning exhibitions and diverse educational programs to more than 200,000 visitors each year. The Museum is a nonprofit organization.

Position Summary

Mingei International Museum is looking to hire one part-time Summer Museum Educator. Summer at Mingei gives kids the opportunity to immerse themselves in folk art, craft and design from around the world. This full-day experience emphasizes children’s innate ability to create and use their imaginations. Together with arts educators and community-based artists, students will create culturally significant artworks relevant to their own lives and identities using professional craft art forms and processes. Summer at Mingei is free of charge and created to serve and support kids aged 8 - 11 from under resourced communities.

Summer at Mingei is designed to eliminate barriers to participation in the arts by offering weeklong project-based camps. The curriculum will focus on identifying, understanding and creating culturally significant artworks, objects relevant to the student’s own lives and identities, made using professional craft art forms and processes. The Summer Museum Educator works collaboratively to lead fun, inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning experiences for kids 3rd-5th grade. They will work closely with the School and Tour Programs Specialist to facilitate art-making, lead gallery exploration with kids and ensure the safety and enjoyment of campers. This is a seasonal position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with the Engagement Learning and Impact Team to facilitate student-centered experiences that nurture creativity and curiosity through hands-on engagement, art, and making
  • Work alongside other educators to serve up to 25 students to lead or assist with camp activities exploring Museum exhibitions, art, culture, craft, making, and design
  • Ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for summer camp participants from diverse backgrounds and abilities
  • Care for, supervise, and ensure the safety and enjoyment of campers
  • Set up activities and clean up the classroom before and after camp day
  • Facilitate morning drop off and afternoon curbside pickup and communicate daily activities to parents

Qualifications

  • Proficient in classroom management and establishing student behavior guidelines
  • Skilled in leading projects both collaboratively and independently
  • Demonstrated passion for effectively communicating and embodying the Museum's mission and vision
  • Capable of maintaining a proactive and optimistic approach when addressing challenges
  • Strong ability to collaborate and show empathy towards students and parents

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and knowledge of a variety of craft art forms and mediums
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willingness to obtain)

Schedule and Salary

Summer at Mingei lasts for two weeks, from July 7th to July 18th, running Monday to Friday. The job hours are 7:45am to 12:45pm. Before camp starts, there will be a mandatory 4-day training session (June 30th - July 3rd, 9:00am - 4:00pm). This is a temporary position, paid between $19.50 and $22 per hour, depending on your experience working in classrooms.
