Travel with Mingei Staff, including Curator Guusje Sanders, to Los Angeles as we explore art, architecture, history, and science—all in one trip!
Our day will begin at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where we will wander the galleries and view exhibitions also participating in Getty’s PST: Art & Science Collide initiative. LACMA features three exhibitions that dive into the themes of PST ART, including We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art, featuring work from exhibiting Blue Gold artist, Porfirio Gutiérrez, and more! LACMA is also co-presenting the Simone Leigh exhibition alongside the California African American Museum, including pieces from her landmark 2022 Venice Biennale project.
For lunch, we will head to The Original Farmers Market where we will be dropped off and given plenty of time to check out the variety of vendors. From light snacks to more hearty meals, the array of cuisines to choose from is bound to satisfy all cravings.
We will end the day at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture. Built in 1922 by Rudolph M. Schindler, an Austrian immigrant and architect, it is considered one of the world’s first modern houses. Originally an experimental take on communal living, it now stands as a pillar of Southern Californian modernism through its incorporation of architectural and social theory.
The cost of your ticket includes chartered bus transportation, a light breakfast, all tour and museum entry fees, snacks and wine for the return bus ride, and a tax-deductible donation to the Museum. Lunch is one's own at the Original Farmer's Market. Our excursions are a great way to get to know the Museum mission better, even outside of San Diego, as we find art of the people in Southern California, Baja, and beyond!
