September 2024 Family Sunday | Mingei International Museum

This month, Family Sunday welcomes back San Diego-based artist, Cara Golden, to teach us a new craft. You may have attended her Family Sunday workshop last year, where we made kinetic puppets inspired by A Palace for Wednesday. Cara's current work examines traditional craft-oriented arts, emphasizing utilitarianism and materiality through techniques like knitting, weaving, and pottery. Her experimental approach highlights the historical importance of craft and design in a contemporary setting.

In this workshop, learn how to craft a turkey wing hand broom using broom corn and indigo-dyed hemp string. The string has been hand-dyed here at Mingei, inspired by our new exhibition, Blue Gold, opening September 14. This workshop is suitable for all ages but is more geared toward ages 6 and up.

Registration is recommended and walk-ups are welcome if space is available. Please use the links below to sign up for a Family Sunday workshop. Space is limited. If the pre-registration slots are fully booked, walk-ins are still welcome.

Family Sunday is made possible through a generous grant from the ResMed Foundation.
