Join legendary skate photographer J. Grant Brittain for an intimate look at 40 years of documenting Southern California skate culture. From inventing custom camera gear like his famous "pole cam" to pioneering darkroom techniques in a pre-smartphone era, Brittain’s career captures the true DIY spirit of photography and skate craft.
In this special slideshow lecture held in conjunction with Skate Craft, Brittain dives into the iconic, hyper-local spots right in Balboa Park’s backyard—including historic sessions at El Cortez, Roosevelt Middle School, the San Diego Zoo banks, and Washington Street Skatepark. Step behind the lens to discover the raw grit, creative problem-solving, and untold stories that turned local San Diego spots into global skateboarding history.
A book signing with Grant for his new book, Beyond Expectations, will be held at Shop Mingei immediately following the talk, with copies available for purchase on-site.
