Proceeds from the zine and community support go toward printing costs, art supplies, and events that keep collective creative action alive at Scripps, making in situ as much a grassroots organizing effort as a publication.
Océane and Theodora will share the evolution of in situ, from its inaugural Seas of Change issue to its current Countercurrents volume, and explore how creative expression can complement scientific inquiry, build community across disciplines, and offer new ways of understanding our oceans. Océane Boulais is a PhD candidate in the Applied Ocean Science program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As an ecoacoustician, Océane listens to the ocean as a language of texture, color, and rhythm and then employs instruments to broadcast sound from healthy coral reefs into restoration reef sites, drawing coral and fish larvae home by sound via "acoustic enrichment".
