Before the internet, how did skateboarders across the country stay connected?
Join skateboard historian Kevin Marks to explore how skaters in the early 1980s used self-published magazines, known as zines, to share news, document their local scenes, and build community. As skateparks closed and backyard vert ramps became gathering places, these publications circulated by mail, connecting and inspiring skaters across the country.
A lifelong skateboarder and industry insider, Marks founded Look Back Library, an organization dedicated to preserving skateboarding publications from the 1960s to the present. Today, its network includes 150 satellite libraries in skate shops worldwide, making skateboard history accessible to new generations.
Marks will also share a selection of zines spanning the past four decades, offering a firsthand look at this influential form of DIY communication.
