Create a Skate with "Professor" Paul Schmitt | Mingei International Museum

Gallery Closure: Admission prices are currently discounted to reflect a partial gallery closure while we install new exhibitions. Learn more about upcoming exhibitions.

Join Mingei for a two-day workshop led by master craftsman and Skate Craft advisor Paul Schmitt. Known as "The Professor," Paul has spent over forty years at the absolute vanguard of skateboard engineering. Since hacking out his very first shape in 1980 and later founding PS Stix, he has quietly dialed in the exact templates, concaves, and mold tech used by generations of the world's most iconic pro skaters.

Under Paul’s expert, hands-on guidance, you will explore the deep science of skateboard design and transform a raw material into your own custom, skateboard deck.

Schedule

  • Saturday, January 16 - Explore how form follows function as Paul breaks down the physics of wheelbase, concave, and taper. Using a cardboard template, you will sketch and draft your custom shape.

  • Between sessions, Paul will take your templates to his personal workshop to expertly cut, route, and prepare your custom maple deck.

  • Saturday, January 23 - Head back to the Museum to pick up your custom-cut deck! You’ll use hand tools to sand your board, then bring it to life with custom stencils, Sharpies, paint, and stickers.

Recommended for ages 14+.
