Iconic Motifs: Designing Repeats with Ellen Van Der Laan | Mingei International Museum

Gallery Closure: Our Exhibitions Level is closed until Saturday, April 5. Learn more about upcoming exhibitions

Wednesday, 3/26, Mingei will close at 4pm for a private event.

Join Ellen Van Der Laan, graphic designer, and co-founder of Baggu, for a workshop on surface pattern design inspired by our current exhibition Fashioning an Icon: Virgin of Guadalupe in Textile Design. In this hands-on session, participants will learn to create their own continuous pattern repeat, carve it into a print block, and transfer the design onto silk to produce a beautifully repetitive motif on a scarf. Along the way, Ellen will teach basic pattern design techniques and discuss the influence of pop culture iconography in product design.

About Baggu Baggu is a San Francisco based company established in 2007 by Emily Sugihara and Ellen Van der Laan. Baggu’s emphasis on sustainability and minimal-waste design resonated deeply with their target audience, propelling them to social media fame for their vibrant, bold patterns.

Seventeen years later, the reusable goods brand has broadened its product offerings and remains immensely popular, recently going viral on TikTok. Many online shoppers eagerly anticipate new product launches, which frequently sell out within minutes.
