Masterclass for Change with Claudy Jongstra | Mingei International Museum

Join renowned artist Claudy Jongstra to celebrate the finale of Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo with a hands-on feltmaking workshop.   In this special masterclass, Claudy Jongstra will guide you through the process of creating your own indigo-dyed felted piece using European indigo. Discover the regenerative and sustainable methods practiced at Studio Claudy Jongstra, where natural materials are sourced, cultivated, and processed with care for the environment and a deep respect for tradition.   As you explore historical feltmaking techniques, you’ll gain insight into how Jongstra’s innovative approach connects traditional craft with a vision for a more sustainable future. Learn how these revolutionary practices honor craftsmanship, support ecological materials, and even revitalize the landscapes where they originate.   Jongstra’s own work, Truth and Beauty in Black, is a striking handmade textile displayed at Mingei’s restaurant, ARTIFACT. It brings warmth, acoustic balance, and a sense of beauty to the space—perfectly reflecting the values of craftsmanship and sustainability.

This workshop includes admission to the Joyce Axelrod Lecture, taking place on Saturday, March 15th at 6pm. This event will feature a panel discussion with Claudy Jongstra, Architect Jennifer Luce, Sarah Bellos, founder and CEO of Stony Creek Colors, and Director of Exhibitions and Curator of Blue Gold, Dr. Emily G. Hanna. A reception will follow. Registration also includes all materials and a box lunch.
