Ritual Images on hand-made paper from the Mithila-speaking region of Northeastern India. The paintings, linked to religious ceremony and marriage rites, were largely devoted to female deities. Women traditionally create these paintings on walls and floors of family huts. Since 1960 both men and women artists have painted them on paper.
In winter and spring, 1997 this exhibition, supplemented by _papier maché_ sculptures from Mingei International’s permanent collection, traveled to the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles.
