Playing continuously in the exhibition was “NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE” – Reflections on Her Art, produced by UCSD-TV in conjunction with the Stuart Collection.

An exhibition of the fantastic imagery and monumental figures of this internationally renowned, self-taught sculptor. Composed of nearly 100 sculptures, paintings, reliefs, graphic works and maquettes created during the last 15 years, this was the most extensive exhibition of Saint Phalle’s art ever seen in the United States. Displayed outdoors in front of the Museum (through November 8, 1999) were eight monumental animals designed by the artist for a Noah’s Ark Park in Jerusalem, a collaborative project with Swiss architect Mario Botta. On indefinite loan to Mingei International was _ANGEL OF TEMPERANCE_, a nineteen-foot-high figure that hung in the Museum’s rotunda. _POET AND MUSE_, a monumental sculpture which has stood since February 10, 1999 outdoors at the Museum’s entrance, entered the Museum’s collection in December 1999, the gift of Frances and Harvey White.
